Why pricing transparency matters in WhatsApp BSPs
If you're paying 2-3× your headline plan and you don't know why, that's not a billing bug — it's the BSP industry working as designed. Here's what we changed.
Why pricing transparency matters in WhatsApp BSPs
We started building SwiftChat after the third time our finance team asked us to "explain the WhatsApp bill again."
The answer was always the same: there are three layers, all of which compound. Plan + Meta charges (with markup) + add-ons. And on every BSP we'd used, all three layers worked against us.
The three-layer surprise
A typical Wati invoice — or Interakt, or Twilio Conversations — looks roughly like this:
| Layer | Headline number | Real number | |------------------|--------------------|-----------------------------| | Plan | $79/mo | $79/mo | | Meta charges | "Pass-through" | $410/mo (with ~20% markup) | | Extra agents | "First 5 included" | $216/mo for the next 9 ones | | Shopify connector| — | $4.99/mo | | Automation pack | — | $49/mo | | AI credits | — | $89/mo |
So the headline price, $79, becomes ~$847 — about 10× the plan number. Multiply across 30+ teams in our customer base and you start to see the pattern.
What we changed
Three concrete moves. None of them are technically hard. They're just choices.
One: Meta charges, at cost. We pass through Meta's per-conversation pricing exactly as Meta bills us. No 20% markup. The downside: thinner margins. The upside: trust, and the kind of pricing math customers do once and remember forever.
Two: every add-on on the same pricing page. No surprise SKUs, no "data residency available, contact sales for pricing" footnote. If we charge for it, it's listed where you sign up.
Three: the next-bill forecast. Open Settings → Billing in your dashboard, you see Estimated next bill: $X — based on current usage trend, with the breakdown. It updates daily. We back-test forecasts vs. actuals to within ±10%. If we miss, we'll show you why, and refund the variance if it's our fault.
What this changes for your team
The boring answer: nothing, mostly. The same agents, the same broadcasts, the same templates, the same AI. The bill just stops being mysterious.
The slightly less boring answer: it un-blocks budgeting conversations, removes the recurring "what is this?" review with finance, and pushes the focus back where it should be — on whether the WhatsApp channel is performing.
We think that's a fair trade.
